About this course
This course teaches the skill of reflective practice and how to apply it in the UAE. It covers what reflection is and is not, the established reflective models (Gibbs, Kolb, What? So what? Now what?, Johns and Brookfield's four lenses), how to move from descriptive to critical reflection, and how to turn analysis into measurable action. It then applies those skills to the situations UAE healthcare professionals actually face: building a CPD portfolio under DHA, DOH, DHCR or MOHAP rules, writing a reflective statement after an incident, complaint or concern, reflecting during supervision or reassessment, and keeping a sustainable reflective habit.
It is written for doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives, pharmacists and allied health professionals licensed by MOHAP, the Dubai Health Authority, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the Sharjah Health Authority or in Dubai Healthcare City. It suits professionals who have been asked for a reflective statement by an employer, committee or licensing authority, those who want a stronger CPD portfolio, and those trained in systems where reflective writing was not taught.
In the UAE, written statements can be read in facility reviews, Medical Liability Committee proceedings and disciplinary processes, and no official rule protecting personal reflective notes was identified. Reflection therefore has to be both honest and careful: factual, consistent with the medical record, free of legal conclusions that belong to the committees, and respectful of patient confidentiality under Federal Law No. 2 of 2019. Every section uses UAE case studies set across the emirates, with practical prompts, knowledge checks and a structured reflective account for your professional development portfolio.

Questions about this course
Which reflective models does the reflective practice course teach?
Gibbs, Kolb, What? So what? Now what?, Johns and Brookfield's four lenses. Module 2 explains when each fits: a quick model for a CPD entry, a structured cycle for an incident, and multiple perspectives when you need to test your own assumptions. You then rewrite descriptive passages as critical reflection.
Can a written reflection be used against me in a medical liability case?
Written reflections can be read by others, so module 6 teaches you to write about adverse events factually, without adopting legal conclusions, and to keep apology, explanation, justification and reflection distinct. It also explains when to seek advice from your insurer, a lawyer or your facility before writing.
How do I keep patients anonymous in reflective writing?
Module 6 applies Federal Law No. 2 of 2019 and your authority's information-security rules to reflective writing: removing names, dates, record numbers and details that could identify a patient, and storing reflections safely. Anonymising well lets you reflect honestly without creating a confidentiality problem.
Does the course help with CPD portfolio entries?
Module 4 shows how to write honest, impact-focused CPD reflective entries that respect your authority's CPD and accreditation rules. The course itself is not accredited by any UAE health authority and carries no CME or CPD credit, so your certificate is a record of self-directed learning.
Is reflective practice useful during supervision or reassessment?
Yes. Module 7 covers keeping a dated reflective log during supervision or reassessment and reflecting with colleagues and supervisors. It finishes with ways to build a short, sustainable reflective habit that keeps going after the immediate pressure has passed, so that reflection becomes part of ordinary practice.
