  • Construct treatment plans that are clinically justified, separate necessary from elective care and offer real alternatives, including no treatment.
  • Apply heightened information and consent standards to cosmetic and elective dentistry and recognise when to slow down or decline.
  • Explain how licence title, clinical privileges and training limit the procedures a dentist may perform, and the link to gross medical error.
  • Provide transparent written estimates and submit insurance claims that are accurate, complete and clinically justified.
  • Recognise and manage conflicts of interest, including commissions, rebates and commercial incentives prohibited by UAE law.
  • Keep complete dental records, report radiographs, make transparent corrections and protect health data in line with Federal Law No. (2) of 2019.
  • Apply infection-control, incident-reporting, open-disclosure, safeguarding, opposite-gender examination and advertising rules in daily practice.
  • Describe how complaints, Medical Liability Committees, grievances and disciplinary penalties work, and demonstrate insight through specific reflection and change.

About this course

This course applies ethics and professionalism to the everyday realities of dental practice in the United Arab Emirates. It works through the federal laws that govern dentists, including Federal Law No. (5) of 2019 on the Human Medicine Profession and Federal Decree-Law No. (4) of 2016 on Medical Liability, the DHA Standards for Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (2025), the DHA and DOH consent rules that require written consent for dentistry, and the Patient's Rights and Responsibilities Charter. Topics include written consent and substitute consent, honest treatment planning, cosmetic and elective dentistry, scope and clinical privileges, fees and estimates, insurance billing integrity, conflicts of interest, dental records and radiographs, health-data law, infection prevention and control, incident reporting and open disclosure, examining patients of a different gender, safeguarding children and adults at risk, boundaries, advertising and social media, and how complaints, Medical Liability Committees and disciplinary penalties work.

It is written for general dentists and dental specialists licensed by MOHAP, DHA, DOH, SHA or DHCR, working in private clinics, dental groups, polyclinics and government hospitals across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates. It is equally useful to dentists new to the UAE who need to understand local rules, to clinical directors who lead dental teams, and to dentists responding to a complaint or regulatory concern who want to strengthen their understanding and show reflection.

Dentistry carries particular ethical pressures: most treatment is irreversible, much of it is elective and paid for privately or through insurance, and patients from many cultures attend clinics staffed by dentists trained around the world. UAE authorities actively enforce the rules on sterilisation, unlicensed staff, records, inflated treatment, insurance claims and advertising. Every lesson uses UAE cases, explains where Dubai and Abu Dhabi rules differ, and ends with practical steps you can apply in your own clinic.

Questions about this course

What does the dental ethics course cover that a general ethics course does not?

Every module is set in dental practice: consent in the dental chair, separating necessary from elective work, cosmetic dentistry, written estimates and insurance claims, radiographs and dental records, infection control and the dental team, advertising, and complaints. The cases involve dentists and dental specialists, so the decisions feel like the ones you face on a normal clinic list.

Does the course help with consent for cosmetic and elective dental treatment?

Yes. Modules 2 and 3 cover written informed consent under the DHA consent guidelines or the DOH consent standard, including substitute decision-makers, and apply higher information standards to cosmetic and elective work. You learn to offer real alternatives, including no treatment, and to recognise when to slow down or decline a request.

Are treatment estimates and dental insurance claims part of the course?

Module 4 covers transparent written estimates, claims that are accurate, complete and clinically justified, and conflicts of interest such as commissions, rebates and commercial incentives that UAE law prohibits. It also explains how licence title and clinical privileges limit the procedures a dentist may perform and how working outside them links to gross medical error.

Does it cover dental records, radiographs and infection control?

Module 5 covers complete dental records, reporting radiographs, transparent corrections and protecting health data under Federal Law No. 2 of 2019. Module 6 covers infection control, incident reporting, open disclosure and the dental team, so the safety and record-keeping duties sit alongside the ethical ones rather than in a separate course.

Is the dental ethics course accredited for dental CPD in the UAE?

No. It is independent education and is not accredited by MOHAP, DHA, DOH, SHA or DHCR, so it carries no CME or CPD credit. The certificate states approximately 3 learning hours of self-directed learning and your score, which you can keep in your portfolio as evidence of structured learning and reflection.
