About this course
This course explains how professional boundaries work in UAE healthcare and how to keep them in everyday practice. It covers the federal duties not to exploit patients, the statutory rule on examining a patient of the opposite sex, the boundary clauses of the DHA Standards for Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (2025), romantic and sexual boundaries with patients and their families, harassment, gifts and financial dealings, dual relationships, access to records, social media and messaging, cultural and religious respect, relationships with colleagues, warning signs of boundary drift, documentation, and what happens when a concern is raised.
The course is for doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives, pharmacists and allied health professionals holding a MOHAP, DHA, DOH, Sharjah Health Authority or Dubai Healthcare City licence, in government or private practice in any emirate. It will help professionals who want sharper day-to-day judgement, those who have moved between emirates with different rules, clinical leads responsible for supervising others, and anyone who needs structured learning and reflection after a boundary concern has been raised about them.
Boundary breaches cause serious harm to patients and are among the conduct matters UAE authorities treat most seriously, with outcomes that can include precautionary suspension, fines, downgrading, suspension, licence revocation and a disciplinary history that appears on future Good Standing Certificates. In a health system built on a highly diverse, international workforce and patient population, clear and culturally respectful boundaries are essential to public trust. Every section uses UAE case studies, practical tools and the exact laws and standards that apply to you.

Questions about this course
What is the difference between a boundary crossing and a boundary violation?
A crossing is a departure from usual practice that may be harmless or even helpful, such as accepting a small token of thanks. A violation exploits the relationship or harms the patient. Module 1 places both on a continuum from under-involvement to over-involvement so you can see where your own relationships with patients sit.
Can I accept a gift from a patient in the UAE?
The DHA Code of Ethics says not to accept gifts, discounts, hospitality or other benefits that may influence, or appear to influence, professional judgement. Module 4 applies this and the DOH integrity rules to gifts, hospitality, financial approaches and dual relationships with family, friends, colleagues and sponsors, with examples of how to decline politely.
Is it acceptable to message patients on WhatsApp or follow them on social media?
Module 5 applies DHA ST-21, section 10.7 of the DHA Code and Federal Law No. 2 of 2019 to messaging, social media and telehealth. It covers using approved channels, keeping personal accounts separate, and handling friend requests and late-night messages without damaging the therapeutic relationship.
How do UAE authorities handle a professional boundaries concern?
Module 8 describes how boundary concerns are investigated, including precautionary suspension, the penalties available, grievance deadlines and the effect on Good Standing Certificates. It explains how breaches of the DHA Code become Schedule 4 violations under Dubai Executive Council Resolution No. 49 of 2024.
Is the professional boundaries course accredited?
No. It is independent, clinician-level education and is not accredited by any UAE health authority, so it carries no CME or CPD credit. The certificate states approximately 2 learning hours of self-directed learning and your score, and the course ends with a structured reflection for your portfolio.
